The reference for this painting is the shrimpboat, “Southern Cross,” docked at one of the bait stands on Packery Channel. I drove by it in my boat early one morning and liked the way it was backlit by the morning sun.

The yellow glow of the sun met the cool, blue color of the shrimpboat and I couldn’t resist trying to paint the combination. I used the same coloring in the reflections on the water, although slightly darker, primarily combining Yellow Ochre with Prussian Blue. I don’t think I used more than five colors to paint the entire piece. I like how the painting holds together when limiting the colors of my palette. It makes for a very peaceful scene.
