Old enough to remember Mathews where Virginia’s now sits in downtown Port Aransas? The reference photo for this painting was taken about the time I was born. It went the way many other old Port A buildings ala hurricanes. I did some simplification on a few things and, yes the boat was in the parking lot. The building on the left was off limits to us kids but I do remember the building on the right as it had wonderful hardwood floors and was full of the old fashioned fishing tackle – and crusty old fishermen like my grandfather. I love everything about this scene, especially the old cars. I kept the colors mainly cool and the sky a bit abstract. I added the red flag they used to refer to as the “Bull’s Tongue,” a sign that the water was too rough to go into the Gulf.
