This is my “signature” painting and used in my signage for the Felder Gallery. It is very important to me as it signifies my return to oil painting full time in 2003.
I “made up” the setting and used a photo I took sometime in the 80’s as a reference for the boats. I also added a small boat that I almost bought a few years ago when I saw it for sale on Packery Channel. It had its shrimping rigs removed and would have made a fun party boat with the addition of a canopy and bench seats in the back. Since it sold before I could get to it, I decided it belonged in one of my paintings, without the bright, purple and pink colors of the original boat of course.
As you look into the scene, the afternoon sun is behind your left shoulder, illuminating the boats as the dark clouds of a “Blue Norther” approach on the horizon. I enjoyed painting this “calm before the storm” theme since it worked well with still water and the crisp reflections that occur without wind.
Since the water reflects the dark sky, it too is deep blue, allowing me the opportunity to paint the contrast between the sun hitting the white of the boats and the dark water. The perspective of the painting guides the viewer’s eye to the dock with one, lonely Gull sitting on a post waiting for the storm along with the shrimpboats.
