This painting came from a photo I took of the shrimpboat, “Choctaw,” moored at one of the bait stands on the Intercoastal at the bridge that connects Corpus with Padre Island. The original photo was bright with lot of contrast. The boat was painted white with bright red trim. I, of course, toned down all the color. More than the boat, I was drawn to the interesting wood of what was left of this old baitstand dock. It had a sort of visual rhythm that I couldn’t resist. I may still paint the same image in bright sun some day, but for this piece I decided to challenge myself to a fog.
I limited my palette to cool grays in the hardly visible background to warmer grays and browns as the image came into focus in the foreground. Even in fog, the area close to the viewer is fairly sharp, so I felt like I could intensify the reflections on the water in the foreground and stay true to the fog theme.
The original photo had a few barnacles where the wood dock met the water since the tide was low when I took the picture. I played those up in my painting and they added nice, crisp details to reflect off the water. As a final touch, I added a Gull swimming in the water making a slight wave on the surface of the water.
